Series: Risk Diversification

The Safe Spread

Eggs = Assets · Baskets = Categories · Table shake = Volatility

For Young Adults

The idea

Risk diversification is easy to say and hard to trust until you have watched concentration wipe you out. The Safe Spread makes the proverb literal: your wealth is a tray of eggs, each basket is an investment category, and the table shakes like a market you cannot control. Over three rounds you drag eggs into baskets, rebalance under pressure, and learn that you cannot predict which basket tips, only how much you lose when one does. Put everything in one place and a single fall empties the screen; spread them and partial loss still leaves most of your flock standing. No coins, percentages, or finance terms appear during play. After the final round, a ghost replay and Metaphor Mapping screen reveal what the eggs, baskets, and shakes stood for all along.

Inside the game

The Safe Spread, Starting fortune

Starting fortune

Twelve eggs of different values open Round 1 as your only wealth. The merchant sets the scene without naming finance: golden, silver, and white eggs are simply your starting flock.

The Safe Spread, Eggs across baskets

Eggs across baskets

Players drag eggs into hanging baskets above the stall. Each basket is a category you can overload or balance, and concentration risk shows up as a pile that looks too safe until it is not.

The Safe Spread, Disaster strikes

Disaster strikes

When the round shakes, some baskets tip and eggs are lost. The farm fiction keeps the lesson physical: you cannot control which basket falls, only how much of your flock was inside it.

The Safe Spread, Spread results

Spread results

After play, a harvest summary shows eggs lost, grown, and preserved per basket. The feedback feels like insight, not a lecture, before the Metaphor Mapping screen names risk diversification.
